Make Me Pretty

This is how Tally feel in the story
 and she really wanted to help  because
she  regret  her actions.

In the last chapters of the book Uglies after Tally found David in the cave both decided to returned to the Smoke at the next day. Everything was in ruins and David´s parents were also captured by Special Circumstances and Tally found the magazines that the Boss was carrying when he escaped. But unfortunately Tally found him dead. When they went to David´s parents house neither Az or Maddy were there so Tally and David decided to rescue all of their friends as also his parents. So they took everything they could need to survive in the way to the city. At the city they stayed at the Rusty Ruins to plan how to enter and rescue everyone from Specials Circumstances. They were lucky because on that night three uglies were looking for the mysterious David. In that moment Tally as also David took the advantage and ask these uglies help to make a trick. The uglies accepted. However, Tally and David didn´t told them about Special Circumstances only that they needed them to distract the hovercars and give them a signal at night when they have successfully enter to New Pretty Town. At the next night, they waited to the signal which was a phrase in the sky that said "The Smoke Lives". David and Tally quickly get at the roof of the building were Special Circumstances was hiding and make their way inside with bungee jackets that help them to bounce and fall to the ground in a secure way when falling from the elevator( if they used the elevator they could get caught so they threw themselves and get inside). They begging to search inside and take a look on the different doors until Tally found one that said Detention Room. She heard Dr. Cables voice and hide. When Dr. Cable get out saw Tally and because David hit Dr. Cable  she fainted to the floor. They entered and rescue all. But Shay was already pretty and her mind was completely different, she was no longer mad at Tally. Also both David and Tally were surprised when Maddy said Az was dead
because he was victim of an experiment. Tally felt sorry but in that moment they have to escape. Everyone run away from the specials successfully and the three uglies help a lot to distract everybody at the city. Finally they reunited at the Rusty Ruins. In those days at the ruins Tally really wanted Shay to recover from the brain damage caused by the lesions implemented at every pretty brain. In the last two chapters Maddy found a cure, however she wasn´t sure it was going to work and Shay didn´t want to be the experimental subject. So Tally offer herself as the willing subject since she felt sorry because all the circumstances they were passing was because her fault so she told everything to David about her being a SPY so he could understand she was the responsible of all the chaos as also the dead of his father and that she wanted to do something even though it was a great risk. David could´t believe it and he didn´t want her to become pretty with those lesions that were going to change her brain so he run away. Tally really want him to understand and before going to the city she wanted to said goodbye to David but she left with Shay knowing that David would go there,to the city, and take her with him after turning pretty. 

Quotes

" Of course, the moment she was cured, her hatred for Tally would return. Which was worse: a friend with brain damage, or one who despise you?" (Westerfield403). 

I think that Tally should accept the consequences of her mistakes and she should try the best to turn Shay as the normal one who was angry at her. Not leaving her as the annoying pretty. I really think a friend with brain damage is worse than the one that despise you because you even feel more guilty by knowing you are the responsible of changing your friends brain since you decided betrayed her. But a friend angry is better because is the same person with the same thoughts and some day she had to forgive you. It also makes you feel better because you are aware of your actions and you understand that your actions were not the right ones. Also is better to hear "I forgive you" from someone who is conscious of what you did not from someone who doesn´t care because brain damage.

"For that matter, what was David going to look like after she´d been surrounded by new pretty faces twenty-four hours a day? Would she really believe all that stuff about ugliness again, or would she remember how someone could be beautiful even without surgery?"(Westerfeld424). 

Tally is a teenager with many fears and many times these fears make her take the wrong way. Now she doesn´t want to loose David and she is afraid of changing completely because she is about to turn herself to become pretty. However, she is brave because she is taking a decision that is going to change her point of view and personality just like all pretties change after the operation. And then she is going to be the experimental subject so Maddy can prove if the pills of lesions work that can leave her in vegetative state. I really hope that both Tally and David don´t lose the love they feel for each other. I wish Tally would return to be herself again and that the lesions disappeared successfully. 

Final Conclusions

From the beginning to the end I love this book I can´t wait to read the second one named "Pretties" because I really want to know what is going to happen to Tally, well everyone in the story. I also think that she did great by telling David the truth because she was hurting herself by feeling so guilty and with a huge weight she had to keep as a secret because she didnt want to loose him. However, sooner or later the truth comes to light and you have to face the consequences. That´s why at some point every word has to be said. I hope David still love her even though the mistake she did. I also want to add my prediction, what I think is going to happen is that after Tally having the operation maybe David would be caught and doctors would turn him pretty and a new problem is going to take place. 

A Big Mistake

In the few Chapters I had read after David told Tally about her parents and his childhood in the Smoke,Tally intended to tell the truth to her friend Shay. However, Shay start to talk and said to Tally that she knew what was happening and who gave her the necklace she was wearing. What Shay thought was that the heart necklace was from someone really important for Tally and that she felt guilty because she told that someone the secret between both that was the Smoke. Part of what Shay thought about the necklace was true except that the "someone" was not a guy it was Dr.Cable that send her there as a spy. After talking Tally felt even more guilty and sorry because she wasn´t there to stay forever she was there so Special Circumstances can find the Smoke. At the next day more events happen that made Tally feel horrible. First David gave Tally gloves he made when he was younger meaning that he was falling in love with Tally and this was a problem because Shay liked David.  When Shay saw that Tally received a gift from the person she love both talked and Shay told Tally to tell David that she already have someone and to show him the heart necklace so in the way David would know she was not interested in him. At night Tally was eating dinner alone until David appeared and tell her he needed to talk with her, so both went to the forest apart of the Smoke and while talking Tally began to have a feeling of love towards him. Tally decided to tell him what she promised to Shay about the necklace and that Shay was in love with him but David did not care and said to Tally that he was in love with her and both kissed. Then David said to her that he wanted Tally to met his parents. It was late at night but they went to David´s parents house. In this visit they talk about many things but the topic that amazed Tally was about a secret that only they knew about. About a discovery they did before escaping from the city. Was about how turning pretty also changed your way of thinking. When someone had the operation they also were modified their brains that only few doctors knew about because they were responsible of the changes. In the brains from the pretties David´s parents discovered lesions which were a bunch of cells that don´t looked right, like cancer. In that way pretties become with an equal mind with equal thoughts and opinions. The lesions were given just to the pretties who didn´t have a job in which they have to take risk. Tally was surprised and she didn´t want to return, she didn´t want Special Circumstances destroyed the Smoke so when David and Tally said goodbye and leave the house, Tally throw the necklace into the fire, without knowing the necklace was programmed to send signals when it was destroyed. So when she woke up Specials Circumstances arrive but luckily she escape after talking with Dr.Cable and ran to a mountain where she found David.

"Now riding on her knees, gripping the board with both hands, Tally twisted into the next turn, dropping to skim just above the cracked dirt of the dry creek bed. She heard the whine of the hovercars steadily build"(Westerfels 317). 

Tally is a teenager that is not afraid of anything. She is brave and intelligent and  was able to escape from the hovercars and the Special that was watching her when she escape in the hover board. Risking her life since she didn´t wear shoes and was not wearing the crashing bracelets that held her with the hover-board. If she do a wrong move then she can fall down and break her neck. 


David spoke up. "The lesions aren't an accident, Tally. They´re part of the operation, just like all the bone sculpting and skin scraping. Is part of the way being pretty change you"(Westerfeld 265).

The city in which Tally lived her entire live has many secrets that are hide to most of the people except Special Circumstances. The lesions in people head makes them be in agreement with what the authorities does and imposes and think the same way all, like being pretty is everything they need. The society in the story is being manipulated and more when they have the operation and the lesions are implemented in their heads. I think is a way to prevent freedom of speech since they think the same no one has its own opinion. Also with the lesions they make people serious and correct for example, Peris he was funny, criticize pretties and have fun escaping with Tally even though they could get in trouble but after the operation his way of thinking change. I think this city is not so different from The Rusties (our society today) because they are also lying people and hiding the truth and treating them as puppets. They also brainwash people minds.  

Final Thoughts

I am really liking this book because has a lot of action as also romance that I really like from a story. I think David is so cute and nice and I like the way he talk to Tally. I hope that when Tally decide to tell him the truth that she at first get to the Smoke as a SPY David don´t get mad for a long time with her. Well I think is understandable if he gets mad but I hope he understands. 

Infiltrator

In the previous chapter Tally talked with Dr.Cable about not having her surgery unless she chose to find Shay and tell Special Circumstances all of the things Shay told her to keep as a secret. After having this conversation with Dr.Cable Tally returned to her room at Uglyville ashamed of returning and being watched by all of the uglies around. She closed her door and cried without knowing what to do and what to chose. Either keeping Shays secret and staying ugly forever or saying everything she knows about David and the Smoke and have the operation. Later her parents enter to Tally´s  room  and comfort her. Also they persuade her and recommended Tally to tell everything about Shay to Dr.Cable unless she wanted to stay ugly for the rest of her life. However, Tally couldn´t betrayed her friend because they made a promised that was to keep everything as a secret. At night Tally went hoverboarding as usually and when she returned to her room Peris, her best friend, was waiting for her. They talked and Peris said to Tally that they also made a promise before Tally met Shay. The promise between Peris and Tally was that she was not going to get in trouble until having her surgery. In that moment Tally decided to say everything to Dr.Cable. When she went to met Dr. Cable she was told to leave the city and found where the Smoke was. In other words she was told to go there as an infiltrator and for this Dr.Cable gave her a necklace with a heart that was like a GPS that was activated just when Tally open her eye in the middle of the heart so her eye can be scanned. Also she was told that nobody should know about this plan, it was just a secret between Special Circumstances and Tally (For Tally this was unexpected since Dr. Cable at first said that for her to turn pretty the only thing she had to do was telling everything she knows about where was Shay, not going to The Smoke as an SPY). On her journey Tally didn´t have too much trouble and she understand all of the directions Shay left in the note that was written in secret code in case she decided to escape and don´t have the surgery which was not the case. Tally´s major problem was when she was almost arriving but she didn´t understand what "Red-eyed bugs" meant and since she was tired she decided to hide and sleep in the field full of white orchids. While sleeping she smelled something burning and heard the sound of fire. When she woke up the field was on fire. In that moment she stand up and tried to find the river. In her way to the water she saw once again a helicopter with people inside. They were the responsible of the fire. The people inside saw Tally and landed the helicopter on the ground and take her inside. All of them were wearing bug masks so Tally realized that was what Shay meant with "Red-eyed bug". But that was not all, she was surprised because when they take out their masks all of them were pretties from a city Tally never had heard before. They were called the "Rangers" and they carry her near to were the Smokies (that´s how the people at Smoke Valley are called)usually receive someone new since nobody know were Smoke Valley was located except for the uglies who run away. After waiting for other uglies to take her with them she saw in the mountain Shay with other people. Tally was happy to see her but she also feel sorry and bad because she was about to betrayed Shay and the others. However, she was confident of doing it. But this change when she heard the story of David, Shay´s friend, because he was born there he was not a run away like most of the uglies at Smoke, instead his parents were doctors who run away and have David in this valley. So the valley was his house.

     

Revealing Quotes

"The flying machine had been just like what Tally imagined when her teachers had described Rusty contraptions: a portable tornado crashing along, destroying everything in its path. Tally had read about aircraft that shattered windows as they flew past"(Westerfeld 166). 

Now I understand who are the Rusties. When someone refers to the Rusties they mean the old society in which we are living now. With social and environmental issues. To end these problems someone has created a new way of administration in which not issues take place and people don´t live in poverty. However, this new regime in which Tally lives is not so awesome as it sounds. With the quote we can see that society in the story is given just one perspective of the aircrafts. So they are basically being lied. They are taught that all of the aircrafts destroyed the surroundings and shattered windows and not that they help mobilizing people more quickly. In this new administration people in charge don´t one someone to break with it and turned society as before without they lies.

"Tally´s eyes widened as Shay turned the pages, pointing and giggling. She´d never seen so many wildly different faces before. Mouths and eyes and noses of every imaginable shape, all combined insanely on people of every age. And the bodies. Some were grotesquely fat, or weirdly over muscled, or uncomfortably thin, and almost all of them had wrong, ugly proportions. But instead of being ashamed of their deformeties, the people were laughing and kissing and posing, as if all the pictures had been taken at some huge party"(Westerfeld 198).  

When I read this quote I was surprised because for me most of the people in the magazines are pretty and beautiful but for Tally they are all ugly and insane. So I think that is funny because neither the most beautiful person is perfect instead is ugly. In this world what the authorities have created is a place where people are only confident when they are pretty and when they are ugly they just feel hatred towards their selves like Tally. She is going to betrayed her friend just because she doesn´t want to be "ugly" forever. I also start to think about how Tally looks like in this book however since everyone is ugly is difficult to imagine their faces because for me ugly is not the same as Tally thinks because she thinks everyone in the world is awful until the surgery and I think that everyone is beautiful with their own face features and bodies.

Final Thoughts

The chapters I had read so far become more and more interesting and Tally has to be intelligent and take good decisions. The decision she needs to make is the one of activating the necklace so Dr.Cable can trace her location. But now she is struggle with what to do because she don´t want something happening that might made David and Shay disappointed. For the next chapters I predict she is not going to activate the necklace and she would begging to change her thinking about the world and she would stay at the Smoke with her friends.
